Oakland, CA & Fukuoka, Japan Sister City 60 Year Anniversary Mosaic Begins

We are creating a wonderful mosaic mural that celebrates the 60 year anniversary of Sister City friendship between Oakland, CA and Fukuoka, Japan alongside community members from OFSCA - Oakland Fukuoka Sister City Association. The design was created in collaboration with participants from Oakland and Fukuoka through several brainstorming sessions, and is chock full of symbolism to carry the theme of ‘Compassion, Peace and Community’.

The short story of the design is: The Black Crowned Night Heron, accompanied by it’s friend, a Japanese Bush Warbler (Uguisu), is traveling across the waters that unite us, to share a gift with another Uguisu who is calling in the spring with his special song. Symbolism throughout the design represents friendship, sharing, peace, unity, prosperity, growth, and love.
